The annual HILL DAY Capitol briefing sessions (virtual this year, of course) took place on 3.11.21, and the Chicago chapter, represented by MITCH MCNEIL and JUDITH MILLER, spent a busy and productive day with staff of Illinois congressmen and congresswomen.
Surfrider Foundation has joined a lawsuit challenging a DOJ policy reversal that prohibits the federal government from including SEP’s among its suite of relief in lawsuit settlements with environmental violators.
“After spending more than 15 months reviewing Enbridge’s record over the last 67 years, it is abundantly clear that today’s action is necessary. Enbridge’s historic failures and current non-compliance present too great a risk to our Great Lakes and the people who depend upon them,”
U.S. Steel Corporation discharged at least 346 pounds of hexavalent chromium into Lake Michigan. This massive spill led to serious concerns about human health and safety, the closure of the Indiana American Water public drinking water intake, and the closure of four public beaches (including what is now the Indiana Dunes National Park). This spill was not an isolated event, but rather a dramatic consequence of the persistent pattern of U.S. Steel’s disregard for the Clean Water Act.
"When a corporation discharges massive amounts of water pollution into public areas that are popular spots for families and recreation on an ongoing basis, they need to be held accountable for it. If agencies fail to step in, then Surfrider will continue to step up and fight for our ocean, waves, beaches and planet.”
